Pressure Sensitive Labelling Machines
Pressure Sensitive Labelling Machines (or Self-Adhesive Labelling Machines) are one of the two primary types of labelling machines (the other is Wet Glue Labelling). They are by far the most popular form of label applicator and over time have replaced many traditional uses of wet glue application.
How do pressure sensitive labelling machines work?
Pre-glued labels are supplied on a reel of release paper, laminate, plastic film, foil or fabric in various thicknesses and weights. They require no water to make the adhesive stick. The labels are applied directly from the feeder reel and are mechanically pressed onto the package or container by brushes or tampers. The machinery is calibrated to apply the correct pressure to ensure effective adhesion without damaging the bottle, carton, tray or other form of packaging.
What packaging uses pressure sensitive labelling?
Pressure sensitive labelling machines can apply labels to a multiplicity of package shapes and sizes, including rectangular cartons, bottles, cylindrical pots, tapered pots, card envelopes, pharmaceutical bottles and fresh food punnets and trays. Labels can be applied on all surfaces, on corners and on multiple sides.
What are the advantages of pressure sensitive labelling machines?
The advantages are that there is no liquid glue or heat required in the process and the label can be made from materials other than paper. The labels can be pre-cut into complex shapes on the reel by means of a die-cutter and stored on the reel until required, with minimal risk of damage. This method of application enables labels to be applied at medium/high speed to soft packages, as well as rigid containers and where the product could be damaged by water or heat.

How do pressure sensitive adhesives work?
Self-adhesive labels use liquid pressure sensitive adhesives which are coated in liquid form onto paper, film or other substrate. The liquid is evaporated usually by hot air to leave a tacky adhesive which can be peeled, then bonded under pressure to the product package.
A large variety of adhesive types are available, and the adhesive is usually selected based on whether the label is permanent or removable, and the material the label will be applied to.
